Here’s a bit of a serial scary story for you to enjoy. I originally published it in a book of scary stories.
Do you ever remember thinking there was a monster under your bed or in the closet when you was little?
What if there really was?
I have a Monster in the Closet book written and published on Amazon for kids but this one leans a bit towards the adult side. Young adults may like it but there are some scenes that are adult oriented.
Monster in the Closet – Part 1
He just knew tonight was going to be it. This would be the night the monster stopped trying to scare him and it would finally kill him. Maybe it’d eat him. He saw that on monster shows. Wouldn’t it be cool if it only ate my stepdad?
“Now Jimmy,” said his mom as she tucked him in. “We went through your closet and looked under your bed. There is no monster waiting there to get you.”
“It’s there. Why don’t you believe me? I saw one last night and it was real. It was green and had tentacles like an octopus. It was just teasing me last night mom but it’s gonna eat me tonight. I know it is.”
“You’re going to make your dad upset if you scream, especially tonight.”
“He’s not my dad. He’s my stepdad. He doesn’t like me and I don’t like him.”
“Now stop that right now. It’ll work out over time.”
“Oh yeah mom? And is he gonna stop hitting you and me someday?”
Her face reddened and he could tell he upset her. She stammered and didn’t know how to answer that.
“Can’t you just stay in here with me tonight mom?”
“You know I can’t. I’ll leave the nightlight on but sooner or later you need to get over this. You need to start acting your age. You’re getting too old to believe in monsters.”
He was ten years old and he was always being told to act his age.
The monster doesn’t care how old I am. He wants to eat me anyway.
“Good night Jimmy,” she said, kissing him on the cheek.
“But mom –“
“Good night sweetie.”
He watched her leave and close the door and wondered if he’d ever see her again. None of this stuff happened until they moved into this stupid house. It wasn’t their house. It was his stepdad’s house.
He was never afraid of the dark before. Sometimes he’d watch scary movies until his mom or dad would catch him and make him stop. His dad would wink though, and when his mom was out he and his dad would watch something scary.
Not real scary. Well, sometimes it was. Goosebumps said it was for kids but maybe they meant older kids. Kids who were teenagers or something because it could get pretty creepy.
He would have to try his best not to scream tonight. His stepdad warned him earlier in the evening.
“You scream tonight and I’ll beat both you and your mom. Keep your ears open kid and you’ll hear me slap her around and remember. It’ll be worse for her if you scream.”
He had to stop himself from screaming no matter what.
He probably put the monster in my room to kill me.
